Personal financial literacy and economic education in schools prepares students for a lifetime of financial decisions, provides the opportunity to live healthier and happier lives, and improves our economy as a whole. Economic Literacy Colorado (EconLitCo) is the only nonprofit in Colorado providing K-12 teachers with professional development and classroom enrichment opportunities to prepare students to achieve personal financial sustainability and self-sufficiency. EconLitCo sets students up with crucial life skills to understand economic and financial security by equipping teachers with tools and knowledge to teach personal finance and economics in schools. EconLitCo accomplishes this by:

ADVOCACY: Ensuring Colorado students have opportunities to learn how the economy works, how to manage personal finances, and how to make well-informed choices. Personal finance and economics are disciplines that establish an important foundation for personal prosperity and create a positive ripple effect for students, their families, and communities. Research shows that high quality academics, coupled with school-based financial education programs, is a key strategy in breaking the cycle of generational poverty.

PREPARING TEACHERS: Offering professional development classes, lesson plans and pedagogy to teachers, schools and school districts, to better educate their students. EconLitCo supports teachers by offering university-accredited graduate-level continuing education at low or no cost to teachers by raising sufficient funds. Research finds that significant increases in student learning are associated with higher levels of teacher qualifications.

STUDENT PROGRAMS: Creating real-world, hands-on opportunities for students to learn about our economic system and explore careers in the financial industry with programs like Stock Market Experience where students can virtually invest $100,000 into real stocks, bonds, and mutual funds; and Invest in Girls where high school girls can meet women business leaders and learn about careers.

Background Statement

Economic Literacy Colorado (EconLitCo) is the only Colorado nonprofit dedicated to providing university-accredited economic and personal financial professional development for K-12 teachers.

In 1971, Governor John Love recognized a gap between what Colorado students were learning about our economic system and what they needed to know to become successful participants in our economy. He tapped into a group of business leaders to address this issue, and by 1976, EconLitCo - established as a 501(c)3 and affiliated with the national Council on Economic Education - was busy training teachers.

In 1978, EconLitCo developed a partnership with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS) to establish a Center for Economic Education. EconLitCo collaborates with the Center's Director and economics professors to develop our various accredited graduate-level classes for teachers.

In 2008, the Stock Market Experience was added as an online investment simulation to teachers and students in 3rd-12th grades. Incorporating math, reading, writing, and technology skills, students work in teams as they learn how to invest in US and international exchanges over the course of a semester.

During our 2020-2021 fiscal year EconLitCo virtualized all programs and trainings to continue equipping teachers and educating their students during the turmoil of COVID-19. We proudly educated 1,179 teachers who reached over 81,000 students in 119 schools districts!

For 50 years EconLitCo has offered professional development classes to thousands of K-12 teachers across Colorado, providing both personal and professional support to ensure they have the knowledge and tools to educate their students for future success.
