While 2021 was a more hopeful year than 2020, the African Leadership Group nonetheless continued focusing much of its efforts on helping mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Colorado's African immigrant community.

Once again, ALG demonstrated that an organization that is intimately connected to its community is best positioned to respond quickly and nimbly to new challenges.

This year, in addition to continuing our highly successful after-school tutoring program, we organized COVID-19 vaccination clinics that were held at our Aurora offices. More than 700 people age 12 and up received vaccines at our clinic, run in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

At the same time, however, we moved forward with some new initiatives that will provide long-term benefits to our community and to all Coloradans. These initiatives, a leadership program and a college scholarship program, will help unleash the brilliance that shines from our people, be they just beginning their careers or already deeply immersed in their professional lives.

The $50,000 scholarship program, partially funded by a generous $25,000 grant from Pacific Western Bank, provided 14 scholarships, ranging from $5,000 to $2,500. Scholarship recipients are attending a wide range of colleges and universities, including Yale, New York University, Howard University, and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

2021 also marked the launch of our new program to develop leaders: Leadership Africa. Twenty-four African immigrant and African American participants took part in the rigorous, nine-month program. It is a professional and civic leadership development program that encourages participants to take on greater community and professional leadership roles by creating a valuable opportunity for gaining leadership skills, building self-awareness, personal development and professional growth, and learning about local systems and institutions.

To fully fund our scholarship program, to continue offering a robust leadership program, and to keep our wide range of other programs thriving, we rely on the generosity of people like you to support us financially. Please consider a gift to the African Leadership Group on Colorado Gives Day.
