Testimonials

"I've enjoyed watching my daughter grow as a musician and have a larger circle of friends and instructors." - LYS Parent

"I like that it's fun and challenging and that the other musicians are nice. It's like having a second family." - LYS Student

"I've had a blast with the Symphony Orchestra. My favorite part of it all would have to be seeing everyone around me start to grow in order to live up to the challenging Music. Everyone in the ensemble is really like a family and I've never felt uncomfortable being around them. Plus, we get to play really cool music!" - LYS Student

"The Longmont Youth Symphony has been a wonderful experience for our son. It has given him more confidence in his playing and the opportunity to play in a more professional setting outside of of school. When we asked him if he wanted to participate for a second year, he said yes without hesitation! The directors of all the different ensembles are wonderful, positive role models for all the children that participate." - LYS Parent

Mission

The Longmont Youth Symphony (LYS) is a non-profit orchestra founded in 1996 and dedicated to working with young musicians in the St. Vrain Valley and surrounding northern front range cities of Colorado. LYS helps young musicians develop and expand their musical abilities through its rigorous creative programs in an encouraging environment. LYS youth have an opportunity to entertain, educate, and promote music appreciation with the greater community while forming life-long desire and ability to excel.

Background Statement

The Longmont Youth Symphony (LYS) was founded in 1996 by a group of committed parents with the goal of providing students in the St. Vrain Valley of Colorado with an additional and more rigorous orchestral experience to advance their students' musical abilities. In 2002, the Longmont Youth Strings Ensemble was added to serve middle school children, and in 2009 the Wind Ensemble was added. In 2005, LYS incorporated as a 501(c)3, leaving the umbrella of the Longmont Symphony Orcehstra.

LYS continues close ties with LSO, through side-by-side concerts and a well-attended 4th of July Concert in Longmont's historic Thompson Park. LYS has also developed a long-standing and beneficial relationship with the Boulder Symphony where it participates in side-by-side concerts with them as well. These joint concerts are an invaluable experience for our students as they provide opportunities to learn how their musical abilities can help foster a strong performing arts community beyond graduation.

Since 2017, due to its community-wide respect for developing musical talent in its youth, LYS has been part of the Longmont Performing Arts Initiative (LPAI) which has the goal of building a community performing arts center in Longmont. The LYS Board is actively involved in this initiative as it recognized that future organizational success comes from collaboration with other performing arts organizations.
