Currently, Eaton serves over 225 residents. The average age of a resident is 75, and the average income is only $18,228 per year. Approximately 30% of residents require assistance with at least one activity of daily living (bathing, eating, etc.). Approximately 98% of residents live alone, and approximately 8% of residents are Veterans. Some residents were previously unhoused and able to utilize the resources available through Eaton to gain or reestablish access to medical and wellness benefits, and more. The average stay in the HUD-subsidized building is four years, and ten residents have been here longer than twelve years! Eaton's residents give back to the community through volunteer efforts, including painting art murals that beautify the Lakewood community, participating in school supply drives, and more. Each chooses to give back in a way that gives them a sense of meaning and purpose.

Eaton’s team of a resident service coordinator and wellness director allows for direct connection with the residents through a voluntary interview tool conducted upon move-in and annually thereafter. This tool, REACH (Residents Engaging in Authentic Conversations on Health), is an avenue for getting to know the resident's health and wellness needs, which in turn, assists us in developing community partnerships to bring on-site to meet those needs. Eaton’s Resident Services Coordinator and Director of Wellness Initiatives were bestowed the inaugural 2017 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Health Equity.

Testimonials:

"I waited three months to move here in 2013. It's perfect because I don't cook; I love my first-floor apartment, the meals, the good staff and the preacher. I've found friends and have played music here with friends for some special events." - Bill D.

"I've been very happy here - great energetic staff, good food and friendly residents. In a nutshell, my outlook on life has improved considerably." --Marvin A.

Mission

The mission of Eaton Senior Communities Foundation is to obtain the resources for Eaton Senior Communities to provide seniors with a variety of affordable living choices and to support programs and activities that enrich their lives.

Background Statement

Eaton Senior Communities Foundation, established in 1994, and Eaton Senior Communities, Inc., established in 1998, evolved from the ministry of the West Alameda Community Baptist Church which responded to a community-wide survey indicating that the foremost need was access to affordable housing for low-income older adults. This community opened in 1980 as Jefferson County’s first subsidized housing for low-income older adults, with meals, supportive services, and scheduled transportation. Eaton is heavily involved in the local community and collaborative partnerships. Eaton staff members sit on the boards of: Jefferson County Coalition on Aging, Adult Protective Services Review Board and City of Lakewood Emergency Management Advisory Committee. On-site partners play a large role in Eaton’s housing-plus-services model by offering on-site services. These partners include: Bloom Healthcare for on-site physicians, Dispatch Health for urgent care, Jefferson Center for Mental Health/Senior Reach for mental health, Legacy Healthcare Services for physical and occupational therapy, OPTUM for nurse case management, ProActive Podiatry, Hearing Rehab Center, OnSite Dermatology and more. Eaton has strong governance strategies in place. In addition to quarterly board meetings, Eaton’s CEO and the Board of Directors hold educational sessions at each board meeting along with annual retreats for the board and leadership team. Succession plans are in place for board and key staff. The Foundation and Eaton have a Board Development Committee to define the qualifications that they are seeking in potential board members and to recruit new members. Eaton has Risk Management and Emergency Preparedness plans in place. While Eaton and the Foundation are separate fiscal entities, they share board members. Both boards have three-year board terms. All board members contribute financially to the Foundation. Independent Auditors produce annual financial reports. Please note, the Foundation does not participate in any grant proceeds raised on behalf of Eaton, the nonprofit management company. Jefferson Center is the community mental health and substance use services provider serving Jefferson, Gilpin, and Clear Creek counties. Jefferson Center was designated a community mental health center under the 1963 Federal Community Mental Health Centers Act, which laid the foundation for a mental health system that would emphasize preventive, community-based care as an alternative to institutionalization in state mental hospitals. Jefferson Center has since become a critical provider of health care and human services across the Front Range, in particular, they are an important partner for Eaton’s residents.
