About:

You can change the lives of the homeless pets at Ark-Valley Humane Society (AVHS) and of owned pets in need in your community.

In 2023, AVHS helped 1,546 animals through our sheltering, adoption & community assistance programs.

With a Live Release Rate of 97% last year, we are dedicated to providing each animal with the care they deserve and the hope for a second chance.

We cannot do this without you. Join us to help continue our lifesaving efforts and make a positive impact in the lives of animals in need by donating to AVHS today!

Here are just a few of the ways your generosity makes an impact:

  • Support core sheltering and adoption services. In 2023:
    • 621 animals were housed at the shelter
    • 388 dogs and cats were adopted from the shelter
    • 185 animals were reunited with their owners
  • Raise crucial funds in support of our In-House Medical Program. In 2023:
    • 212 shelter animals were spayed or neutered at the shelter
    • 64 shelter animals received additional surgical procedures to address pressing health concerns such as hernia repairs, dental cleanings and extractions, mass removals, and more.
  • Ensure sustainability within our essential community assistance programs and partnerships to help owned pets in need. In 2023:

    • 264 cats and dogs living in Chaffee County received assistance with reduced or no-cost spay/neuters through our community spay/neuter program.

    • 643 owned pets in the community received food from the pet food pantry

    • We partnered with Chaffee County Hospitality to offer motel room stays for unsheltered individuals and their pets during the coldest nights of the year, offering 54 nights of respite and benefitting 9 additional community pets.

    • We partnered with Chaffee County Community Foundation to offer a community pet medical emergency fund that benefitted 22 additional community pets last year.

    • And more!

Background Statement

In the early 1990s Buena Vista, Colorado had only The Shed, which was overseen by law enforcement. It consisted of unheated, short-stay kennels for stray dogs. Dogs sweltered in the heat of summer and water bowls froze in winter. No services were available for cats. A group of concerned citizens decided it was time for a change. In 1991, founding members established Ark-Valley Humane Society (AVHS) as a nonprofit organization to humanely care for stray and unwanted pets in northern Chaffee County. By 1995, the AVHS shelter had opened its doors in Buena Vista. Soon, hundreds of dogs and cats each year were cared for by staff and volunteers until loving homes were found for them.
