Testimonials

"DCSAR came to the aid of me and a group of hikers when we got disoriented and night fell upon us in Castlewood Canyon. We were all so grateful to see the headlights of the rescue team and we are so grateful that the volunteers came to our aid. Thank you!"

-Gina M., Castle Pines, CO

You guys are incredible! You volunteer your time to rescue others, I have never been so happy to see four complete strangers in my life! Thank you for the rescue, water, and sincere concern, so thankful for you!

Mission

Our mission is to search for lost or missing people in the backcountry and the urban areas of Douglas County and to rescue, provide emergency care for or recover those stranded, injured or otherwise incapacitated in the backcountry.

This is all done at no charge to the victim or their families.

Background Statement

DCSAR began in September of 1998, as a 501(c)3 non-profit all-volunteer organization, and had its first meeting in October of that year. Members went through intensive training that fall and the team was declared operational in December. The team's first mission, for two missing dirt bike riders on Rampart Range, was on February 10, 1999. The missing bikers were located cold, but alive, in near blizzard conditions by team members.

From that humble beginning, the team has developed into a professional SAR team with a wide range of talents, skills and capabilities. We are a Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) accredited team, one of 13 in the state, a member of the Colorado Search and Rescue Board and a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). ASTM may sound a little strange but they develop guidelines for the various positions on a SAR team. This is very helpful in developing our training guidelines.

In our 840 square mile county, we have the opportunity to interact with seven fire agencies, five law enforcement agencies, the US Forest Service, the Park Service, the Office of Emergency Management and multiple medical centers. In addition to the team trainings we do, we try to do as many multi-agency trainings as possible.
