A small Non-Profit making a big difference! GVPA has been successful in funding spay / neuter surgeries in Mesa County, yet it will be years before our help is no longer needed. 2023 has been the biggest year in memory of kittens being born into colonies, and to pets that were not fixed. This rolls over from the COVID 19 shutdown of spay/neuter surgeries, combined with warmer winters. The calls for help from GVPA come daily, most involving "kittens born under the deck".
Mission
Grand Valley Pets Alive (GVPA) was founded to reduce the number of homeless pets in Mesa County by funding spay / neuter of pet cats, dogs and rabbits, and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) of community cats (feral cats or abandoned pets living outside solo or in colonies). Education for the need to spay / neuter pets is of key importance.
The goal for 2023 is to top the total of 632 spay / neuter surgeries funded in 2022. GVPA is on track to do this. With support, 2024 can be even better.
Background Statement
Grand Valley Pets Alive was conceived in late 2012.
September 22, 2013 GVPA received its 501 (c) (3) EIN. Efforts went forward to raise funds and get the word out about the new non-profit. While some spay / neuter was paid for prior, in 2014 GVPA began issuing certificates to pay in full or a significant part of the cost of spay / neuter surgeries. Traps and carriers were purchased with a grant from the Binky Foundation. They are loaned, and colony caretakers are taught to use them for TNR. By halting reproduction, a colony can be stabilized and over time will age out. Volunteers give hands on help to those unable to conduct TNR on their own. Volunteers construct winter cat shelters which are donated where needed. That first year 211 "romantic repairs" were funded. From 2014 - 2022 a total of 3863 spay / neuter surgeries. The total for our top year, 2022, was 632 !
An all volunteer non-profit, working from homes, our expenses are minimal. Over 93% of funds generated go to program. Donations large and small add up to fund the "romantic repair" of pet cats, dogs, rabbits and the TNR of Colony Cats. Some in colonies are feral, frequently there are abandoned pets.
GVPA works with rescue groups in Mesa County and beyond to find homes for kittens born into colonies, and abandoned pets. Some GVPA volunteers also foster for area shelters.
The Rowdy Emergency Medical Fund came about when a cat shot by his former owner was rescued by a GVPA volunteer. Fundraising for his surgery and care brought in more than was needed to pay his bills. The remainder was put aside to help other animals with medical emergencies. Rowdy recovered well, and has been adopted by a great family. The REMF is refilled by dessignated donations.
