Re:Vision

A nonprofit organization

We believe access to healthy food is a right, not a privilege. Westwoood is a culturally vibrant neighborhood where residents are reimagining the food system to be equitable, accessible, and culturally relevant. Re:Vision uses food as a catalyst to cultivate a thriving community.

Testimonials

"I was deeply honor to be in Denver on August 2, sharing the day with the city's magnificent cultural citizens - the people and organizations who, like you, are working so hard to put culture in the service of society - and with the many people you are so visibly helping. I thank you profoundly, not only for your many efforts in making this day happen, but also for all of your ongoing work." - Yo Yo Ma, world renowned cellist and Humanitarian.

"...We are so grateful and proud to have learned how to grow our own vegetables. It has helped cut our grocery bill almost in half, there were times when I had to rely on food banks for food... This summer was very productive for us we grew a variety of different vegetables...I had an abundance of vegetables and was actually able to share with family members, friends and even strangers. My daughter and I had so much fun this year gardening together that we can't wait to do it again next summer." - Lydia Trusty, Re:Farm program participant

"Thank you very much for your patience and willingness to teach me and my family how to plant and grow our vegetables. The whole family is very happy to participate in the garden. We appreciate more of what we eat since we have learned how to grow our own food. It has been an incredible experience. Thank you all for this program as we continue moving forward." - Blanca Cardona, Re:Farm program participant

"Being a promatora is very rewarding because I am growing as a person and becoming more self-sufficient, while teaching other families to grow food and eat healthy. This is an opportunity for me and for my community to have a better chance at a healthy life." - Mayra Olivas, promotora (community health worker) for Re:Vision

"Re:Vision has done much more than grown 200+ backyard gardens, established community farms, and acquired funding for creating a community food cooperative. What is most impressive is that ReVision has developed an approach to community organizing that has built on the assets of community residents so that they have developed a new sense of themselves as civic leaders and a more expansive view of the possibilities for their neighborhood. ReVision is an outstanding organization that is creating positive and lasting change in Denver." - Susan Jurow, university professor, (shortened from a review on greatnonprofits.org)

"Re:Vision is a phenomenal organization driven by passionate, educated and informed leaders. The promatora model is a well-executed model that leads to sustainable change at the community level and beyond." - Winter Wall, volunteer & field expert

"The program has been a great experience for the whole family, especially for my two youngest daughters - every evening they are able to spend time with their father while he tends to the garden, and they get to eat the fresh vegetables! We have had a generous harvest and it is very satisfying to be able to share it with our neighbors and family." - Maria Gutierrez, Re:Farm program participant

My family and I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Re:Farm Denver program. Having our own garden has provided us the opportunity to have quick and direct access to organic vegetables, and we're proud to be able to share our harvests with other family members and the community. We are especially thankful for the endless support from the promotoras who ensure the backyard gardens are successful." - Margarita Macias, Re:Farm program participant

Mission

Our Mission is to work with people in economically marginalized neighborhoods to develop resident leaders, cultivate community food systems, and create an economy owned by the community.

Background Statement

Re:Vision is dedicated to community leadership, ownership and empowerment of low-income residents of color through food justice. Our approach transcends traditional food access solutions such as food pantries and community gardens. We are intentional about creating a local food justice economy, supporting the entire food chain, from the local farmers to the recipients. As such, we work to reimagine systems and encourage empowerment of as many people in the supply chain of a food system as possible.

Over the last 13 years, Re:Vision and residents have transformed southwest Denver's Westwood neighborhood-which has suffered from decades of underinvestment and neglect-into a thriving, resilient community. Our programs Re:Farm, Re:Unite and Re:Own are redefining neighborhood development through a lens of equity & social justice. Because a community cannot economically or culturally thrive without satisfying health as a precursor, our work is centered on health and racial equity, addressing the systems that create health disparities, and re-imagining and creating new ones.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020, Re:Vision's 8 Promotoras made over 1,000 calls to families to gauge community needs and create emergency responsive programming. Promotoras are women and mothers from the community, who are instrumental in designing and implementing Re:Vision's programs-ensuring that families have a voice in neighborhood development as key stakeholders. By July of 2021, Re:Vision distributed more than 14,000 prepared meals, 1,000,000 lbs of food to 8,500 families, connected 500 families to Pandemic-EBT benefits, and in partnership with Denver Health's (DH) Department of Public Health (DPH), hosted 8 community testing days, testing a total number of 756 individuals.

With our expertise in community-led development and reimagining systems, Re:Vision is a trusted resource to inform that work for Denver communities as we emerge into a new phase of societal life.
