Testimonials

"For me, a chaplain is more than a religious figurehead, which I think is important; but [a chaplain] is also a friend, a mentor, a confidant - it's someone you can trust...it's someone I want to be in my life..." - Jared Watts, former Major League Soccer athlete

"I have seen the power of chaplaincy when the chaplain shows up...at the waiting room with the family prior to surgery and really gives them hope, a sense of calm and peace, and is there to offer a prayer..." - Brian Shultz, former Head Coach Valor Christian High School

"The street boys of Kampala were incredibly grateful and I got to personally see how some simple uniforms could bring value and a sense of belonging to a group of young boys who desperately need it." - Chris Piehl, Pastor Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church

Mission

United by a common code and shared vision to provide spiritual care, wise counsel, and meaningful service for soccer.

Background Statement

Soccer Chaplains United (SCU) began in 2002 with a singular vision: to provide spiritual support to those in the world of soccer. Beginning with one chaplain, serving the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer, there was a recognition of the the unique pressures faced by athletes and the need for holistic care that addressed both physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being.

As positive impact of the chaplaincy spread, the demand and opportunities for similar support grew. SCU expanded its mission, focusing on training and equipping chaplains who could serve at various levels of the game. The organization’s commitment to nurturing the spiritual lives of players, coaches, and staff resonated with many, leading to a network of support that crossed the boundaries of amateur and professional soccer.

Today, with an established presence across the United States, the number of chaplains has surged to 33. Each volunteer chaplain committed to and dedicated to fostering a sense of community and resilience within their respective environments.

SCU chaplains not only provide spiritual guidance but also have become crucial resources for addressing issues such as mental health and life transitions. Soccer Chaplains United continues to strive for the highest levels of chaplaincy professionalism while serving the people that are all part of the American soccer landscape.
