Why does mentoring matter?

Mentoring is life-changing with a ripple effect that doesn’t just touch one life, but can transform schools and communities, shape future leaders, and create a better world. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado, we believe that every young person deserves to graduate high school with a plan for their future and with the guidance of a mentor whose impact lasts a lifetime.

The need in our community is significant, and that's why we're expanding! We've grown our programs to include not only 1-on-1 mentoring, but also school-based peer mentoring. This year, we’re on track to serve 1,549 youth—a 15% increase from last year and the most we’ve served since before the pandemic.

Despite our growth, our waiting list continues to grow—with nearly 400 kids, mostly boys, waiting for mentors. Your dollars donated during Colorado Gives Day will go directly to helping us to sustain our programs and reach those kids who are still waiting.

Testimonials

“I am going into my freshman year at Colorado School of Mines to study chemical engineering. I was really inspired by Scott’s work and what he taught me about surgical technology. I just want to say, I don’t think I could have done any of my accomplishments without having Scott as a support for me.” – Little Xavier

“To me, MentorLife means being a person that others can look up to,” – STARS Mentor Daniel

“This year we have become really involved in the Big Futures Program, which lets me explore and understand my options for after graduation! BBBSC has had so many opportunities to help push me out of my comfort zone. Madison has been a great mentor to lean on and keep encouraging me to do my best.” – Little Kai

“George is, and always will be, my Little Brother” – Alumni Big Stuart

“Being Ayden’s Big Brother has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever participated in, and I am so grateful for BBBSC for connecting us.” – Big Kyle

Mission

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado is to create and support mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Background Statement

Since 1918, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is incredible potential. As part of the nation's largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers ("Bigs") and children ("Littles"), ages nine through young adulthood in Colorado. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

The organization was established as Big Brothers of Denver in 1918 to provide guidance to boys who were increasingly engaging in lawless behavior during World War I. In 1969, Big Sisters of Colorado was formed to address the growing needs for girls in the late sixties. The two organizations merged in 1996 and became Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado. In 2001, the organization joined with Big Brothers Big Sisters-Pikes Peak and now operates two offices, one in Denver and one in Colorado Springs.
