Testimonials

"Thanks to the Colorado Watershed Assembly staff for providing exceptional facilitation and watershed planning services to support the Chatfield watershed planning process. We have relied on the staff at CWA to provide stakeholder development, outreach, education, website communication, and facilitation for our watershed planning. They have done a super job with a limited budget and quite frankly, we could not have done the watershed plan without their support service. They demonstrated watershed planning savvy to a diverse group of stakeholders through innovative outreach approaches. We highly recommend their professional, cost effective services to other watershed groups that are conducting watershed planning!" - Julie Vlier, Chatfield Watershed Authority

"I first learned about the Colorado Watershed Assembly and the Inflow Newsletter about three years ago when I was in Denver for a conference. My job at that time was to provide resources and assistance to New Jersey watershed groups, and I ran a newsletter that was very similar to Inflow. I signed up for the Inflow Newsletter thinking it might give me good ideas for my newsletter. I found out about webinars or funding opportunities through your newsletter that I hadn't come across otherwise, so was able to provide more information through my newsletter. In addition, the Inflow Newsletter also helped me with my job search - it was how I found out about my current position with the Colorado Water Trust." - Alyse Greenberg, Colorado Water Trust

This money goes directly to support local watershed organizations throughout the state in their efforts to provide clean water, protect habitat and improve recreation and accessibility.

Mission

The next time you're rafting, fishing, or simply enjoying the experience of being near the waters of your local river or stream, wouldn't it feel good to know you've helped protect what you love? The Healthy Rivers Fund and Colorado Watershed Assembly is a way to do just that. We invest donations from people throughout Colorado to help local organizations who know their communities best. These groups complete improvement and protection projects to keep our waterways healthy, accessible and full of life.

The Colorado Watershed Assembly's mission is to provide support for collaborative efforts among diverse stakeholders to protect and improve the conservation values of land, water, and other natural resources of Colorado's watersheds.

Background Statement

In 1996 there were six recently organized local watershed initiatives in Colorado. In 1997, the Colorado Water Quality Control Division was reorganized around the watershed approach which resulted in funding capability for non-point source projects through the Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund and the creation of four new regional watershed coordinator positions.

As a result, by 1999, there were 40 local, citizen-based organizations addressing critical resource issues to meet community needs. Today over 75 watershed groups throughout Colorado share a commitment to solving problems within watersheds based upon consensus and cooperation. The leaders of these groups have realized that some of the problems they're facing at the local level were the result of decisions, policies and circumstances that occurred far beyond their watersheds. They understand that if they wanted to succeed at making substantial improvements to their natural resources and protect their watershed, they need to have influence at the state, regional and national levels.

It was from that need that the Colorado Watershed Assembly was created. The CWA is not only a group that provides services to watershed groups. It is a coalition of Colorado's watershed groups in some ways similar to how the Colorado Association of Conservation Districts (CACD) is the association for all 77 independent Conservation Districts. While CWA has integrated state and federal agency representatives into its committees and the organization as a whole, only the member watershed groups are granted a vote on matters before the Assembly.
