Background Statement
Compañeros began as a grassroots coalition in 1999 that formed to block the proposed construction of an immigration detention center in La Plata County. The members of this coalition differed in race, ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status, immigration status, and political affiliation but found commonality in their shared values of promoting social justice, equity, and inclusivity for all. Through effective community organizing and power building, they ultimately succeeded and blocked the detention center from being built. Following this victory, the coalition decided to harness its momentum and create a resource center that would serve rather than detain immigrants, formalizing into a program under the fiscal sponsorship San Juan Citizens Alliance, a local environmental justice nonprofit. Thus, Compañeros: Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center was born, and existed in this form before becoming an independent 501(c)3 organization in 2011. While some other local nonprofits do occasionally have clients in common with us, none of them have this same organizational focus on addressing the specific needs of immigrants. With the bilingualism of our staff and volunteers, the cultural competency and knowledge about serving non-English-speaking and undocumented immigrants, and the recognition of our name and awareness of our existence among the immigrant community, we fill a unique niche in our community.
