The Harm Reduction Action Center is Colorado's largest syringe access program, with over 10,000 enrolled participants and sees between 100-125 people per morning being pro-active about their health. They have the opportunity to dispose properly of used syringes, access sterile syringes, and are offered referrals/resources. There is access to Naloxone, vein care with staff, resources, referrals, their mail/phone, HIV/HCV/STI testing, fentanyl testing strips, supportive service providers (MHCD, St. Francis Center, substance use treatment navigators, Medicaid enrollment, etc), and community in a safe space. In addition, we provide mobile syringe exchange in high drug traffic areas 4 afternoons per week and provide syringe clean-up efforts all over the City.
We have committed ourselves to serving Colorado's public health by working to reduce the harms associated with injection drug use. Since 2002, our organization has provided direct services that curb the spread of HIV, Hepatitis C, and accidental overdoses among people who inject drugs. To bolster our direct service efforts, the Harm Reduction Action Center also works closely with lawmakers, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and the general community towards a common vision of a healthy and safe Colorado. We believe the streets should influence the policies at the State Capitol and Denver City Council. We have passed 7 pieces of statewide legislation in the past 10 years (4 to reduce the harms associated with overdose and 3 for syringe decriminalization) and led 3 Denver City policy changes.
On top of all of this, we also offer technical assistance for providers working within bureaucratic institutions that our participants intersect with daily. These institutions include, but are not limited to; law enforcement, criminal justice, healthcare providers, neighborhood associations, and nursing/medical/pharmacy students tour to see what we are (and aren't), learn more about our programming/services, and the ability to ask questions. In addition, we provide presentations to the larger community to chat about harm reduction and working with PWID for a healthier and safer today.
Oh, and meetings, grant writing, hugs, high fives, and administrative work. All of this with 8 staff, over 500 volunteers, 3-5 interns at any given time, and we never take a snow day.
Your donation to Harm Reduction Action Center provides unrestricted funds to spend on the items we need most (syringes, naloxone, and supplies for our drop-in center). To meet the growing demand of our services and allow our programs to expand, we must continue to expand our sources of funding.
A monthly donation to HRAC means you are continuously contributing to the public health and safety of people in Colorado. Your donation allows us to continue saving lives, prevent disease, and provide dignity to a community that is stigmatized and marginalized.
