Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado

A nonprofit organization

Mission

Our country rightfully takes great pride that its courts are open equally to all. But if you cannot afford a lawyer, the courthouse doors may as well be locked. Fortunately, the Legal Aid Foundation has helped ensure that free civil legal services are available to low-income Coloradans for over 40 years.

The Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado promotes equal access to justice by raising funds to provide civil legal services for low-income people in the state of Colorado.

As an organization committed to providing a meaningful voice in our civil justice system for those who would otherwise go unheard, the Legal Aid Foundation recognizes that equal justice is too often denied to those most in need of its guarantee. We stand in solidarity with all those in Colorado and across the country demanding racial justice and reaffirm our commitment to fostering an internal and external culture of anti-racism. As a funder of civil legal aid, we will continue the vital work of strengthening equitable access to justice for historically marginalized and disenfranchised communities in order to ensure fair treatment and facilitate the continued systemic changes that lead toward a more equal and just society for all.

Background Statement

There is a civil justice crisis in the United States. It might look like a family wrongfully evicted from their home, a homeless veteran with untreated PTSD, or a woman unsafe in her own home because she cannot escape her abuser. Many faces and stories comprise this crisis, but the common thread is a civil justice system that fails to meet America’s promise of equal justice under law.

Every year, Americans encounter life-changing problems that they cannot resolve because of barriers in accessing our civil justice system. At some point, most people have a problem like a divorce or wrongful treatment by a landlord or debt collector and need a legal solution. But millions lose their cases in civil court, not because they have done something wrong, but because they do not have the legal information or assistance they need.

The Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado raises money for Colorado Legal Services (CLS), Colorado’s statewide Legal Aid program. CLS is the only agency in the state that provides free legal services in civil cases to clients who could not otherwise afford them in every Colorado county through a network of 13 offices.

Priority is given to addressing the legal needs of low-income people required to maintain the basic necessities of a life, including adequate income, food, shelter, utilities, necessary medical care, and freedom from domestic violence and financial exploitation.
