Background Statement
Program Description: Making small quilts for kids in crisis.
ABC Quilts of Colorado is an organization comprised of between 70 and 100 volunteers creating small quilts for children in crisis or need of love and comfort. These quilts benefit children in situations such as social services, women’s safe houses, teen mom centers, homeless family shelters and emergency rooms.
Founded in 1993 by Bonny Rogerson, ABC Quilts of Colorado became incorporated in 1997 and received Federal 501(c) 3 status in 1999. Originally it began with a very small group of volunteers donating a small number of quilts for babies born in fragile health. As our number of volunteers has grown to more than 70, also the number of small quilts donated has grown. Over the past many years more than 40,000 quilts have been created and donated to give love, comfort, security and warmth to children in crisis.
Our volunteers meet at two different locations. The main group meets once a month at St. James Episcopal Church, 8235 W. 44th Ave., Wheat Ridge, CO. The north group meets once a month in Boulder, Co. The meetings consist of members showing their finished quilts, sharing new quilting ideas, choosing fabric from our fabric room and enjoying their brown bag lunch. Twice a year, in the months of April and October, a potluck is held with a speaker from one of the agencies that distribute our quilts giving us information on their agency and sharing ways in which our quilts are given to the children. Through the act of sharing our talents by making small quilts for children in crisis, volunteers are sharing friendships, supporting one another and encouraging of the art of quilting.
