The scales of justice symbolize truth and fairness. They represent the idea that regardless of wealth, power, privilege, or status, all people deserve to be seen, heard, and to have their rights upheld. But while every person accused of a crime has a right to an attorney if they cannot afford one, that is not the case if someone is forced to navigate a life-changing civil legal matter such as an eviction, or a debt collection, or a civil protection order to protect them from physical abuse or stalking.
In the world of civil legal aid, the scales of justice are not always balanced. While 82% of people filing a civil lawsuit in our county courts are represented by a lawyer, only 3% of the people responding to those lawsuits are represented by counsel. Alpine Legal Services is the only free legal aid organization covering the Aspen to Parachute region, and while our team works tirelessly to contribute to a more fair and equitable system of justice in our region, we need your help to keep the scales balanced.
Alpine Legal Services provided free legal aid to more than 1,900 individuals in our community last year. These are people who need protection from an abusive partner or parent, or who are looking to prevent an unlawful eviction. Our clients are children who were abused or neglected by a parent in another country and are seeking a legal path to US citizenship, or seniors seeking protection from scam artists and predatory lenders. These are just a few examples of the nearly 2,000 people Alpine Legal Services assisted last year.
We simply cannot do this work without you.
All donations are tax-deductible, and every dollar is used to uphold the rule of law and advance justice from Aspen to Parachute.
