Alternative Horizons helps survivors of domestic violence heal the trauma of their individual experiences of abuse and powerlessness. Alternative Horizons provides safety planning, counseling, advocacy and connection to essential resources which empower survivors to self-determine their own futures
Alternative Horizons gets between 700 and 800 hotline calls a year. For our little area of the world that is a lot. Intimate partner violence is a very real and dangerous problem in La Plata and San Juan Counties (Silverton).
Intimate Partner violence is on the rise in La Plata County. There is a chance that you know someone who has been affected by intimate partner violence. They could be your neighbor, teacher, friend, co-worker, mother, brother, sister, or partner. Together as a community there is nothing that we cannot do if we all stand together and help those who truly need it the most. Will you join us in standing up survivors of intimate partner violence?
"Working with Alternative Horizons for the last two years has helped me realize there are people out there who care and who want to help. I have never felt like a number working with this wonderful group. They genuinely care about people. I really do not think I could have done any of what we have done together by myself. I can not express how thankful and blessed I am to have met such wonderful people. I do not feel like just a client. I feel like family/friends, and it is a great feeling to have. I am truly appreciative and beyond happy to have had and continue to have the chance to work with the wonderful people at Alternative Horizons. This world needs more people like them and more organizations such as this one. "
Survivor
June 2021
In the early Spring of 2024 I reluctantly contacted Alternative Horizons after several members of the community told me about the possibility they might be able to help me. I am a survivor of domestic abuse and was desperate for any kind of support when it came to legal assistance. I was scared but called Alternative Horizons and was met with a kind, safe voice on the other end of the phone. Within a few days, a caseworker contacted me to talk with me further and invited me to come in and meet with her. I felt so safe & supported while telling my story and once I finished, we talked about the different supports offered at Alternative Horizons. My caseworker calls me often to check in on me, which I am so grateful for. She attends all of my Court related hearings so that I never feel alone, and she has made a tremendous difference in my life during a time when I felt so alone and scared. At this moment, I am unsure where I would be if I hadn't contacted Alternative Horizons. Many times, for so many reasons, victims and survivors of abuse do not want to ask for help. Sometimes we are tired, scared, overwhelmed and living with tremendous trauma and trying to "do it all" on our own... I am one of these people. I can say that one of the best decisions I have ever made was my phone call to Alternative Horizons. I can never express my gratitude for what they have done to support me in my ongoing time of need.
Survivor August 2024
The mission of Alternative Horizons is to provide advocacy and resources to domestic violence survivors and their children, while striving to promote community awareness through education and prevention efforts.
Alternative Horizons (AH) is a non-profit agency established in 1978 with the purpose of providing advocacy and support services to survivors of domestic violence in rural La Plata and San Juan Counties. Alternative Horizons was founded on the belief that every person has the right to safety within their homes and intimate relationships. The founders of Alternative Horizons recognized the need for a no-cost community-based service for people victimized by domestic violence. AH was created to meet this need and began providing a 24-hour hotline. Over the last 45 years, Alternative Horizons expanded services beyond the hotline to meet the ever-increasing and unmet needs of survivors and their children. During 2023, AH provided the following types of services to 329 unduplicated survivors of domestic violence and their children and answered 889 hotline calls.
