Testimonials

"Healthy rivers are crucial to our business. I am grateful to American Rivers for doing critical work of protecting and restoring the health of rivers across the Colorado River Basin and nationwide. It matters to me, not only as a business person, but as a parent and grandparent. Clean, healthy rivers aren't a luxury. They are fundamental to our life." --George Wendt, Founder OARS Rafting Company

Mission

American Rivers believes that every community should have clean water and a healthy river. Our mission is to protect wild rivers, restore damaged rivers and conserve clean water for people and nature.

Background Statement

American Rivers was founded in Denver in 1973 by a group of river runners and conservationists who were committed to advancing the dam removal movement and ensuring that rivers across the country were permanently protected through the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (which became law in 1968). Now headquartered in Washington, DC, we have protected and restored more than 150,000 miles of rivers through advocacy efforts, on-the-ground projects and an annual America's Most Endangered Rivers® campaign. We have offices throughout Colorado and across the country as well as more than 275,000 members, supporters and volunteers.
