Testimonials

Note: Because the Club carefully protects the anonymity of its attendees, personal testimonials are not attributed to specific individuals.

However, the Club's success can be seen in several ways:

1) Pre-COVID, we hosted as many as 32 recovery meetings a week, with 1,500+ visits occurring each month. We are back up to 27 meetings a week, are at an estimated 80%+ of our pre-COVID attendance levels.

2) Our work is enthusiastically and financially supported by generous and thoughtful donors, including the Daniels Fund, LPEA, United Way, La Plata County, as well as many other organizations and individuals. Notably, many of these individuals chose to join the AAC as Club members, and provide financial support through their annual membership fees and donations. Members receive satisfaction, gratitude, and the ability to attend all Board meetings, in return.

3) Here is a heart-felt testimonial letter from a Club attendee: "I have tried to get sober a few times and this time is much different. I called the Alcoholics Anonymous hotline. They had a regular Animas Alano Club attendee contact me, and take me to my first meeting there. Many people with different lengths of sobriety were there to welcome me with open arms. I felt right at home and have attended a meeting at the Animas Alano Club almost every day for 30 days. Their meetings are held morning, noon, and evening so it makes it easy to attend them. A large part of my recovery has been meeting with Club members before and after meetings. The "club house" welcomes all, and allows us to help one another with our recovery. My family desperately needed my help. While drinking, I was unable to give them this support. Now, I am able to support them financially and emotionally. The help I have received from the Animas Alano Club has allowed me to become a contributing member of society again.

Mission

The Animas Alano Club (AAC, or "the Club") provides unique and critical recovery support to alcoholics and addicts of all kinds, in a welcoming, safe, and permanent location, free of addictive substances and behaviors, for meetings, friendship, recreation, and education, at no mandatory cost to the attendees, or to the community. Our emphasis on hosting "12-step" meetings lets people learn from, guide, and support others who are in recovery, in a non-judgmental, private location. These meetings, plus many other fun, social activities that are possible because of our special facility, help people in recovery, as well as their loved ones, in what are serious struggles - and which are often a matter of life-or-death. The Club addresses these issues 365 days a year. The AAC is tightly-managed (no paid staff, only volunteers), and donation dollars go a long way, and help a lot of people. Our facility - whose permanence is special - drives most of our expenses (mortgage, utilities, maintenance). We are aware of no other regional support provider like ourselves, and we work collaboratively other entities, such as Axis Health, Manna Soup Kitchen, the court system, and others, to help as many people as possible, as much as possible!

Background Statement

The Animas Alano Club incorporated in Colorado as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in April 2015. From its inception, the Board wanted to find a facility that could provide room enough and parking for group meetings, and other recovery-related events and social activities, that could run in size from 5 to 100+ individuals at a time. In 2017, the Club entered into a "rent-to-own" agreement with the vacating owner of the Cowboy Church, at 2601 Junction St., and completed the facility purchase in March 2021. The Club is managed by a 6-member Board which meets monthly. Board members are heavily involved in day-to-day operations. Because of this, and thanks to excellent volunteers, the entire Club is run with no paid staff whatsoever, meaning your donations never pay for salaries, or other staffing costs, so they can really do the most good!
