Background Statement
Aspire Medical Services and Education was founded 25 years ago to offer free pregnancy tests and educational services. Archuleta County is in rural Southwest Colorado with a population of 12,000 and 60 miles from the nearest city of Durango. Archuleta County uninsured rate is estimated at 24%. A full 51% of the children in the county qualify for free and reduced lunches; the poverty rate is estimated at 13%. Approximately 34% of Pagosa Springs is Hispanic. While there are resources for basic health care, there has been a lack of ongoing education, support, mentoring and prenatal care for pregnant women and parents of young children.
In 2016, we opened our prenatal clinic and we are now the only prenatal care provider in Archuleta County. Prenatal care (up to 36 weeks) is provided by our Medical Doctor every week. Client visits continue to climb. We currently see more than 80% of pregnant women in Archuleta County for at least one of our services.
We are focused on helping children have a healthy start to life. From birth to age 3, a child’s brain develops more than at any other time. A critical factor in nurturing healthy development is parents’ ability to read and respond to their baby’s cues about how they are feeling and what they need to feel safe and secure. To that end, we offer a number of group classes, parent/toddler activities, and individual education. We also partner with a local counseling center to provide free Mental Health counseling one day a week.
