Testimonials

Dear Colorado Gives,
I am writing on behalf of Boulder Opera.
This small, non-profit organization has been providing the Boulder community with fantastic opera performances for eight seasons. These performances have taken place in unusual locations including cafes, intimate music halls, bars, restaurants and our band shell structure located in Boulder's central park.
These location choices along with their free Band Shell performance have created increased accessibility for the community.
Boulder Opera works with Boulder Valley School District to augment curriculum for our elementary students.
Boulder Opera has received several grants from the Boulder Arts Commission for the work described above.
Did I mention that Boulder Opera's company of artists have exceptional voices? They do.
I recommend Boulder Opera be included in Colorado Gives Day with out reservation. Boulder is fortunate to have this talent as part of our community.
Sincerely,
Mark Villarreal, Chair - Boulder Arts Commission

Mission

Boulder Opera makes opera accessible and inspiring, building new audiences and enriching the community through innovative productions. Our Family Series presents condensed versions with narration, while our full-length productions feature classic and contemporary works designed to engage diverse audiences. Through outreach programs, including study guides and free workshops, we educate young generations and connect opera with other disciplines, supporting both the arts and local musicians.

Background Statement

Boulder Opera Company brings high-quality opera to Boulder, enriching the local arts scene as the city’s only opera company since 2012. Through vibrant, fresh productions, we’ve introduced thousands to opera, blending music, dance, and art in a unique way.

In our 2023-24 season, over 5,000 people enjoyed our performances, and 3,000 Boulder school children saw "Xochitl and the Flowers." This American immigration story portrays a family’s determination to build a new life while honoring their heritage, and it reached a diverse student audience from many backgrounds.

In May 2025, Boulder Opera presents "Echos of Freedom: New Works by Young Composers," a concert showcasing vibrant new voices in the operatic landscape. The program opens with The "Phenomenal Cage," a powerful one-woman opera by Griffin Candey and Joshua McGuire, exploring themes of personal liberation and identity. The second half features dynamic art songs by CU Boulder student composers from diverse backgrounds. This concert is an exciting opportunity to experience bold, fresh perspectives and celebrate emerging talent in opera and art song.
