In 2016, one person’s passion for wild burros started the epic journey of Burro Base Camp. The corrals became a sanctuary and proving ground for the untamed burros Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.

At Burro Base Camp, the wild burros are introduced to humans who are eager to support as they embark on their transformation from wild to mild.  Each burro’s journey of discovery includes trust-building and companionship as they work towards mastering the skills needed to thrive in a domestic setting.  As each burro works towards accepting touch, grooming, haltering, leading, and loading into a trailer, they take symbolic steps towards their new destiny in a trusted forever home where they will have the opportunity to continue to build their skills and thrive knowing the love and care they deserve.

In August of 2021, the activities and operations of Burro Base Camp were relocated to a private farm in Kiowa, Colorado.  While the partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and the wild burros continued, a new chapter unfolded to embrace burros - both wild and domestic - who needed a safe place to land regardless of origin, or who found themselves in auction yards and sale pens, through no fault of their own, facing an unimaginable fate.  Our reach stretches far beyond the borders of Colorado to find the burros who need our support.

The programmingand facilities were expanded to support these deserving burros.  Quarantine pens were built to safely welcome the burros to the farm, and an intake program was established to assess current skills, veterinary needs, and hoof condition. Once all needs are addressed, and the burros display their ability to thrive, the search for a trusted forever home begins.

In early 2023, Burro Base Camp attained its 501(c)(3) designation empowering the organization to reach further and better support the burros in need of a soft place to land.  Burro Base Camp strives to fulfill our mission of finding trusted homes for previously wild and domestic burros while acting as a steward to the burros through training and to the burro community through education

Burro Base Camp is committed to transparency, accountability and ethical practices in all aspects of our work. We operate with integrity and uphold the highest standards of animal welfare, ensuring that every decision made is in the best interest of the burros under our care.

Since our inception, we have supported more than 400 burros. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on the generosity of our donors, sponsors, grants and volunteers to continue our mission. Together, we are making a meaningful difference and building a brighter future for our beloved burros.

Join us in our efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and advocate for burros in need. With your help we can give them the love and care they deserve, one burro at a time.

What is the difference between a burro and a donkey? Burro is the Spanish word for donkey.  Some say the burro is a wild or previously wild animal while a donkey is domestically born.
