Centennial Area Health Education Center

A nonprofit organization

As health professionals retire, new professionals who understand the unique needs of a rural community are needed. CAHEC seeks to address shortages and health disparities in our 12-county region (Jackson, Larimer, Weld, Morgan, Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Yuma, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, Lincoln).

Mission

To improve health outcomes in northeastern Colorado by connecting existing and future healthcare professionals and communities with resources and education.

Background Statement

The U.S. Congress created the National Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program in 1971 as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The AHECs were created to link the resources of university health science centers with local planning, educational and clinical resources.

Today, this network of approximately 300 AHECs provides multidisciplinary educational services to students, faculty and local practitioners, ultimately improving the quality and delivery of healthcare in medically underserved areas throughout the U.S.

The Colorado AHEC Program Office was formed in 1978 under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus and, as part of the Colorado AHEC network, Centennial AHEC was established to serve the northeastern part of the state.
