Background Statement
When the CF Foundation was established in 1955, people born with the disease weren't expected to live to attend elementary school. Today, because of our efforts, people with CF are living into their 40s, 50s, and beyond.
Since 1955, the CF Foundation has added decades to the lives of people with the disease. These gains are the direct result of advances in treatment and care made possible through our innovative business model, called venture philanthropy.
By raising funds needed to fuel CF-specific drug development programs, we encourage pharmaceutical companies to invest in rare-disease research.
Each new breakthrough is a building block that brings us closer to our ultimate goal: a cure for all people with CF.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has unrestricted financial reserves of about 10 times its 2024 operating budget. These reserves are largely a result of the Foundation's successful venture philanthropy model, through which we have raised and invested hundreds of millions of dollars to help discover and develop breakthrough CF therapies. These funds and any future revenue from our model are reinvested into the CF Foundation's mission to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives.
