Background Statement
Charis Youth Ranch was founded in 2009 with the rescue of 11 PMU horses from Winnipeg, Canada. Destined for slaughter, these foals, yearlings & one 2 year old filly were snatched from death and brought to the ranch to begin a new life. Of the original 11, CYR still has two, Trigger and Angel. From there, we began to rescue Off The Track Thoroughbreds and others who had found themselves at risk of being sent to slaughter. We have rescued from auctions, bidding against kill buyers, feedlots, & neglectful owners. We have also taken in horses surrendered by loving owners who were unable to continue their care.
From the beginning, we had the vision to partner our rescued horses with underserved youth in hopes they would connect through shared experiences. We believed the impact of the horses' stories shared with the youth could mirror their own experiences and bring about an environment to heal.
We currently have 24 horses and have had as many as 32 in years prior. Our volunteer army has grown to almost 100 loving and generous humans who partner with us to care for the horses, maintain the facilities and interact with the youth in our programs.
Charis Youth Ranch has served well over 200 youth in Northern Colorado. We have had partnerships with area nonprofits such as Turning Point Youth & Family Development, The Matthews House and area churches.
We are situated on a serene 15 acre facility in SE Fort Collins where we conduct our equine-assisted programs designed to demonstrate to youth unconditional acceptance, encourage self-esteem, teach communication & leadership & a heart of service.
