A winter of terrible air pollution in 2013/14 inspired a group of concerned citizens to begin studying what causes sporadic poor air quality in the Grand Valley and work towards solutions.
We became a 501(c)3 in 2018.
That same year we initiated the PurpleAir quality monitoring system here. The program transmits current air quality data to an internet map, available to the public, incorporating citizen scientist participation. We continue to service, repair and replace over 60 monitors, some of which are located at area schools. Importantly, residents and visitors who are sensitive to the effects of air pollution (those with respiratory and cardiovascular issues) are able to check the online map and plan outdoor activities accordingly if the air is bad.

Additionally we have just finished our fourth year of experimenting with a charcoal-like material made from biomass - called biochar - a product with the potential to decrease the use of agricultural outdoor burning, increase soil water retention and crop yields, and sequester carbon.
This and other efforts by our all-volunteer organization have helped bring awareness to the importance of protecting our precious air.
