This day camp is SPECIAL… a sports camp for the physically disabled, designed for children who use a wheelchair or could use a wheelchair, so that they are able to compete in wheelchair sports.
This camp enables youth with disabilities to enjoy the same experience a day camp provides to their able-bodied peers. This camp is open to physically disabled children in grades K through 12TH. As a result of people like you, donations, grants and volunteers, this sports camp is offered at NO CHARGE to participants and their families.
The wheelchair sports camp includes instruction in these sports: ARCHERY HAND CYCLING BASKETBALL TENNIS GOLF FENCING SWIMMING YOGA SOCCER SOFTBALL RUGBY DANCE LACROSSE` FISHING SLED HOCKEY
Our mission is to foster the same camaraderie and self-confidence building opportunities for children with physical disabilities that is afforded to their able-bodied peers through the participation in sports.
The self-esteem building techniques taught at the camp enables youths with physical disabilities to become active and productive members of society.
For nearly 40 years, Mary Carpenter (a retired occupational therapist from Children’s Hospital Colorado) has been hosting a sports camp for children with physical disabilities. For one week every the summer, disabled kids from all over Colorado have been given the opportunity to come together to learn and play a variety of different adaptive sports. For many Colorado disabled youth, this was their only opportunity each year to participate in a sports program of any kind. At the end of the week, all these kids would return to their homes and dream of what they would do next year.
