The Colorado Sun is a journalist-founded, award-winning and nonprofit news outlet based in Denver that strives to cover all of Colorado so that our state — our community — can better understand itself.
In this way, we believe we can contribute to a more vibrant, informed and whole Colorado.
We are committed to fact-based, in-depth and nonpartisan journalism. We cover everything from politics and culture to the outdoor industry and education.
Our goal is to produce the best possible journalism. We do that with the help of you, our readers.
VISION:
Be Colorado’s most-trusted, equitable, free and accessible statewide news outlet.
News is a public good, and we seek to build Coloradans’ greater understanding of the state’s people, policies, and places through in-depth, nonpartisan coverage of everything from politics and culture to the outdoor industry and the environment.
MISSION:
The Colorado Sun produces investigative, watchdog, explanatory and long-form journalism to ensure that all Coloradans have access to the information they need to be informed citizens.
The Sun is a team of Colorado’s most experienced, award-winning and trusted journalists producing in-depth, high-quality coverage of our state. The Sun sheds light on rural and underserved communities and promotes greater understanding among diverse enclaves within Colorado. Our writers and photographers capture the spirit, culture and complexity of the people and institutions that define Colorado.
The Sun embraces our responsibility to provide coverage not only from far-flung communities, but for them whenever possible. Because all Coloradans deserve access to knowledge and information, The Sun shares our content with dozens of other news organizations across the state, collaborates with radio and TV colleagues and produces a podcast that serves, among others, members of Colorado’s blind and vision-impaired communities.
The Colorado Sun provides daily statewide coverage of politics, culture, education, the outdoor industry, and more. Founded by a team of Colorado’s most experienced journalists, we are a trusted anchor for news in Colorado’s rapidly changing media landscape. We’re committed to educating the public and telling complex stories. For six years, our award-winning journalism has brought increased understanding to Coloradans about their state.
Colorado faces critical threats to high-quality journalism. Our state has experienced deep cuts to the number of news outlets and journalists available to cover critical issues. As is true across the nation, Colorado is seeing a rise in “news deserts,” diminishing citizens’ understanding of what’s happening in their communities — especially outside the Denver metro area. Our coverage helps fill the gap in local news accessibility so that Coloradans may have trustworthy, high-quality news about their state.
Our thorough statewide reporting helps counter societal breakdowns that appear when local stories lack coverage. We aim to bring about a more engaged, better-informed society by examining what it means to live, work, and play in the state. Our work supports an efficient, more honest government, as well as a deeper understanding among Colorado’s citizens of the most important issues facing the state.
