Testimonials

Campers and families tell the story!-

"Thank you for helping me go to your camp. Every year I am so excited when we get to the month of June and I will go back to camp. It is so much fun doing the high ropes course, roasting marshmallows, and seeing my old friends. Camp is my favorite thing to do!"

- Eli D. (Colorado Springs)

Colorado Lions Camp has been providing service to the community and people with special needs across the state of Colorado since 1969. The camp was originally built for those with visual impairments, as LIONS CLUBS across the world continue to be the Knights of the Blind. It has since grown and covers people with many physical and mental disabilities as well as offering services to children in Foster Care. They help each camper build friendships, self esteem, self reliance, all while enjoying outdoor experiences in a safe environment. What it has done for my daughter is amazing, she used to be so fearful, shy and had minimal friends, now she is so social and confident. She has attended camp for 14 years and still can't wait to go each summer. She starts talking about it at Christmas! Thank you Lion Camp! Parent-- Sandy B.

Mission

The mission of the Colorado Lions Camp is to provide exceptional camping programs to individuals with special needs which promote independence, challenge their abilities and provide opportunity to discover his or her own potential in a safe, positive environment.

Background Statement

In 1964, Lion Dr. ML Crawford offered his cabin in Steamboat Springs to be used for the very first camp session sponsored by the Lions Clubs in Colorado. There were five girls that attended that summer; each girl was visually impaired. In 1966, several Lions signed personal notes to purchase the present location of the Colorado Lions Camp. At the 1968 State Convention, the Lions of Colorado voted to build a permanent camp, and forty acres were purchased from the Brethren in Pike National Forest, just north of Woodland Park. In 1969, the Lions Camp hosted it's first year of residential camping in the newly constructed facility which serves as the Luke Lodge today. A total of 16 campers who were visually impaired attended. Today, over 350 campers with a variety of disabilities attend our summer and respite programs throughout the year.

The Lions help support programs and pay for over 70% of the campers who attend camp. We operate 10 weeks of camp for different age groups and disabilities. We have grown into the camp we have today by the funds donated by the Lions Clubs of Colorado and the donations from individuals with the same devotion to people with disabilities!
