Background Statement
In 1993, a small group of dancers from the University of Northern Colorado and an ambitious dance professor created UNC Dance Theatre. They put together a number of formal and informal performances. Their first major production was 19 years ago when they performed Carmina Burana with the Greeley Children's Chorale.
In December 1994, UNC Dance Theatre introduced the very first Nutcracker performance to the Greeley community, again in collaboration with the Greeley Children's Chorale. There were 25 dancers, ages 5 to 34, in this first production of The Nutcracker.
Then in June 1995 this same group of dancers created Colorado Dance Theatre, which brought to our community performances such as Carmina Burana, Peter and the Wolf, Les Syllphide, Paquita, Pas de Quatre, Sleeping Beauty, Miranda's Nightmare and The Nutcracker.
Colorado Dance Theatre's production of The Nutcracker has continued to grow over the years. The 2015 cast had over 120 dancers, ages 6 to 50+. Our cast members represent many of the local dance studios and educational institutions in Greeley and the surrounding area.
Through the years, Greeley has nurtured a strong dance community of both performers and spectators. Colorado Dance Theatre is proud to be a large part of this.
