"My son was pretty hesitant about coming to Camp BraveHeart not knowing what to expect - coming because I asked him to. When I picked him up he couldn't stop talking about how much fun he had, all of the things he learned, how much he enjoyed being with the other kids. Joy is not something I see from my kids everyday anymore and I miss it. I miss it so much. Thank you for putting light in my child's day- in his life.Thank you for everything you did. Thank you for making him comfortable, for teaching him. Thank you for making this mama cry happy tears today." Mother of Camp BraveHeart participant
"I wasn't sure I would ever feel happy again after losing my wife of 46 years. The Community Grief Center gave me hope by giving me coping tools."
"I didn't want to go at first, but it turned out to be enjoyable and very helpful." - TREK High School participant
"This place made me feel stronger." - TREK Middle School participant
The Community Grief Center helps people of all ages grieving or anticipating a death find connection and healing; and educates the community on grief's impact on the individual and society.
In late 2014, an initiative was started to develop a program for those who have lost someone to death. We formed a Grief Board and held our first fundraiser in 2015, asking local citizens to support our dream of a Community Grief Center. With the support of Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D., a grief program was created with a curriculum grounded in his teachings on Understanding Grief.
Under the board's leadership, a relationship with the Community Foundation was established to receive tax deductible contributions to support the center. In January 2016 the board received the center's 501c3 non-profit designation. That year we found a building and opened our doors, and we have been open ever since--even through COVID. In 2021 we received our BBB Non-profit accreditation.
Based on a foundation of success and hope in the hearts of those who support us, the dream of a place dedicated solely to help all grieving people due to a death continues. The Community Grief Center is governed by a Board of Directors that provides visionary leadership and works to ensure continuous funding from the community and other sources. The Center's Executive Director and our Program Director provide the leadership, and daily management of programs and operations. We offer both individual and group programs, as well as different groups to meet specific needs. We have offered no cost services to thousands of people of all ages, ranging from 5 years old through mature adulthood, our oldest being 92! Dedicated trained volunteers as well as graduate-level interns assist in our many programs and activities.
