Giving Activity

Mission

Since 1972, Community Resources, Inc. has enriched the education of Denver Public School's students through a multitude of programs. These include family nights that explore literacy, science, math and the arts; science and career fairs; programs that bring community speakers into the classroom; and mentorships for students with a passion for learning.

A 501(c)(3) organization, CRI also empowers parents at primarily at-risk schools by giving them tools they need to become actively engaged in their children's education. CRI programs are requested by the schools, managed by CRI staff and ultimately made possible by hundreds of Denver-area volunteers.

Background Statement

Community Resources Inc. (CRI) is an independent educational non-profit 501(c)(3) that was established in 1972 as an avenue for the community and schools to come together for the benefit of the students. Since then CRI has grown to serve over 90 schools and 90,000 students each year. CRI works closely with many of the District's poorest schools where most of the families live at or below the poverty level and English is not their native language. In many instances the parents lack the tools needed to help their children succeed in school. Often the schools are stretched for resources to better meet their students' needs. This is where CRI comes in.

CRI is the organization that provides a link between individuals and organizations in the Denver community and the students and families in our schools. Knowledge of the unique challenges faced by each of our schools allows us to better match the resources from the community with the needs in the schools.

Specifically, we provide programs in four project areas: Classroom Speakers, that brings individuals and programs into classrooms; Academic Mentors, that matches students with a curricular and/or career passion with adults from the community who share that passion; Family Involvement Nights, that creates fun and educational family night events for elementary schools; and Special Events, that creates events such as Science Days, Art Days, Science Fairs etc. that enhance the educational opportunities within our district.

Each of our projects calls upon the generosity of hundreds of volunteers from the community who give of their time and expertise for the sake of students. Our projects are designed to enrich the education of students without adding to the workload of the teachers and building staff.
