Mission

DenCoKID builds our community's awareness of dyslexia, provides a web of support for the families and educators of students with dyslexia, and advocates for improved learning outcomes for all Denver kids.

Background Statement

DenCoKID, based in Denver, Colorado, emerged from the statewide organization COKID (Colorado Kids Identified with Dyslexia). Since 2016, we have focused on improving outcomes for the approximately 40,000 young people living, working, and going to school in Denver who have or are suspected of having dyslexia.

We began by hosting free community support group meetings in the homes of concerned parents and educators. Today, these meetings take place via Zoom and feature guest speakers from various relevant fields.

To raise awareness about dyslexia, we conduct hands-on empathy-building simulations that help participants experience the challenges faced by individuals with attention and language-based learning differences.

In October 2022, we launched our first Dyslexia Awareness Campaign, which included lighting the Denver City and County Building to honor those living with dyslexia in Denver County. The following year, the Denver City Council presented us with a proclamation recognizing dyslexia and its impact on our community.

In 2023, with support from nearly 1,000 petitioners, we successfully advocated for the adoption of a universal dyslexia screening policy in Denver Public Schools. This initiative aims to ensure the early identification of dyslexia in all students, promoting equitable access to support and resources for those who need them most.

Our ongoing efforts include:

• Ensuring that dyslexia screening tools in Denver schools are comprehensive, effective, and science-based.

• Advocating for the implementation of universal dyslexia screening in kindergarten.

• Promoting identification and support of older students whose dyslexia has gone unrecognized.

We have recently launched new programs, including a Book Donation Drive and Educator Scholarships, aimed at providing all Denver Public Schools with free dyslexia-related books and enabling educators to attend the Reading in the Rockies Conference, hosted annually by the International Dyslexia Association, Rocky Mountain Branch.

With the ongoing support of our generous donors, we are committed to delivering free dyslexia resources that empower our entire community.
