DENVER SOUTH PTSA SUPPORTS STUDENTS VIA FOUR MAIN AREAS - ACADEMICS, ARTS, ACTIVITIES AND ATHLETICS
The 4A's approach enhances EVERY student's experience through student enrichment and assistance, faculty support, and capital or program funding as identified by school administration and PTSA.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Mini-Grant Program: A comprehensive grant program which reaches almost every area of the school. Examples - guest instructors for dance and music, choir uniforms, virtual geography goggles, club scholarships and bus transportation, new kiln, mental health outreach, athletic shed, and MUCH, MUCH MORE!
• Teacher/Staff Appreciation: Four events per year.
• Student Initiatives: Support of Student Senate at Freshman Academy, Homecoming, Culture Day, Prom, and After Prom.
• Social/Emotional Awareness: Sponsoring Social/Emotional Wellness Week
• Permanent Art Collection: Juried selection of student art which is featured throughout school hallways.
• I am Denver South Direct Giving Campaign: Our goal this year is to raise $120K. The funds raised support the activities outlined above and enable contributions to the school to cover items which are not funded by the District or cannot be covered by our annual budget but are important to making South a competitive school while retaining our unique culture and community.
The Denver South PTSA is an enthusiastic group of parents that has all students' interests at the heart of what we do.
NEW!! At checkout, you can designate the Giving Grocery for your donation! The Giving Grocery is a fiscally sponsored program of the PTSA, providing free, nutritious, and culturally significant groceries to South students. We serve over 200 students per week with fresh produce, meat, milk, eggs, and pantry staples, as well as personal care products. Help us support South's most vulnerable students!
PTA's mission is to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
Although it is the newest of the directional high schools, Denver South High School has a tradition that stretches back to Denver's earliest days. South High School developed out of Denver City's Union School. Since Denver's south side was the least populous in the city's early days, the area did not get its own school until 1883. This school was called the Grant School and served all elementary through high school students. In 1907, a separate junior and senior high school was added to Grant School. Although the school was still part of Grant, it was unofficially known as the Denver South Side High School. In 1919, the junior and high schools at Grant split into separate buildings. Grant High School officially became Denver South High School in 1926, when the high school portion of Grant was selected to become part of the Denver City Beautiful project. The new high school building was built bordering Washington Park, and was designed by the prominent Denver architecture firm Fisher and Fisher. The building is inspired by the Basilica of Santa Maria Cosmedin in Rome, a church famous for housing the skull of St. Valentine. In 1992, South High School was designated as a National Historic Landmark
South High School is proud to have students from over 50 countries who speak over 60 languages. From across the street or across the world, South students, staff and parents, celebrate the multi-cultural aspects of the student body. The school offers over 20 Advanced Placement classes, on campus concurrent enrollment offerings and honors classes which are available to all students. In addition, South has a broad selection of Arts offerings including Jazz band, Dance, Drama, Drawing, and Ceramics. Finally, there are over 20 Varsity sports, including JV & freshman teams, where all students have an opportunity to participate.
