Giving Activity

Mission

Durango Animal Connection is a 501c3 organization dedicated to serving the animals in the Four Corners Region through rescue, foster, and adoption.

In 2014 Erin Nissen founded Durango Animal Connection from a desire for helping animals and a growing understanding of the issues faced in the Native American and Indigenous communities in our region. Erin is deeply passionate about rescuing dogs and cats from the Navajo, Ute, and Hopi Reservations and, as a result, founded this rescue on the principles of compassion, respect, education and collaboration. In 2018 Durango Animal Connection received non-profit status allowing the organization to fundraise more effectively and, in turn, serve more animals and communities in the Four Corners

Background Statement

Durango Animal Connection is a 501c3 founded on the principle of compassion for all living beings. Since 2014, we have rescued hundreds of dogs and cats, in turn bringing joy into the homes of their adopted families. Thanks to donations and our foster and adoption families, DAC is dedicated to saving the lives of unwanted and abused animals in the Four Corners region. Since its establishment in 2014, Durango Animal Connection has rescued and adopted out hundreds of dogs and cats. In 2022 the organization found forever homes for 85 animals, and to date in 2023, we have found homes for 87 animals. 2023 has already surpassed 2022 with several months left in the year.

In 2018 Durango Animal Connection received its 501c3 status; as a result of the non-profit status, the Board and Executive Director worked to develop a wider foster home network. An increase of foster homes increases our animal care and intake capacity. Recently, Durango Animal connection has began to focus on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation to more regularly and efficiently serve the Tribal communities and animals. DAC has worked for the past two years to develop a relationship with the animal control staff in Towaoc. This relationship allows Durango Animal Connection to be notified when animals at the shelter are in need of rescue. In addition, engagement and cooperation has led to invitation to visit the shelter and further communicate with the staff.

In October of 2023 the Executive Director and two Board Members volunteered their time at a spay/neuter clinic in Towaoc, CO. We assisted a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other volunteers to spay and neuter over 275 dogs and cats from the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation. Joining other volunteers in driving through the town of Towaoc, we assisted in picking up animals whose owners were unable to provide transportation. Additionally, Durango Animal Connection visited the animal control shelter, rescuing and spaying/neutering another two dogs and one cat. Durango Animal Connection took in one of the dogs and the cat to be fostered, and eventually find forever homes.
