Devo offers kids the opportunity to build confidence, friendships, fitness, and outdoor skills through fun, accessible, creative cycling programs in the Durango area.
Through our generous scholarships, diverse outreach programs, memorable overnight trips, affordable town races, and free community programs, we strive to share the love of cycling and the outdoors with all Durango kids and families, regardless of background and financial situation.
Your donations support the following key initiatives:
SCHOLARSHIPS
Devo awarded $23,670 in scholarships in 2024. While Devo boasts reliably affordable registration costs (subsidized by approximately 50 percent), 87 kids relied on a scholarship award to participate in our teams and trips this year. One of our primary goals in 2025 is to continue our streak of awarding scholarship funds to every qualified applicant, and increasing outreach to even more potential scholarship riders via both in-person and online efforts!
OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Beyond youth cycling programs, Devo brings the Durango community together and makes cycling accessible to a wide range of individuals. The 2024 Devo Community Bike Swap saw 445 bikes rehomed between community members. Devo held four free, school-based Bike Rodeos to promote road safety, concussion prevention, fun and useful bike skills, and to give out free helmets to any youth who need them. In addition to all this, we threw two free, open-to-the-public social rides and Q&A sessions with Devo alumni / Paris Olympians.
TRIPS
All upper level teams go on a weekend bike trip each season. Kids may go bikepacking in the desert, travel to a bike park to try new downhill trails, or just go camping under the stars. On these trips our riders — under the care and guidance of our most seasoned coaches — are asked to rise to a new level of independence as they take on more responsibility, learn new skills, push beyond their comfort zones, and find new meaning to the concepts of teamwork and belonging. These trips rely on Devo’s fleet of safe, well-maintained vehicles, dedicated support staff, and scholarships for riders who need them.
AFFORDABLE RACING
Together with our sponsors, Devo proudly hosts a low-cost, community-based local bike race series that is open to the public and free to Devo riders. We believe that all racing-curious individuals should have the opportunity to try it out, regardless of age, experience, or ability to travel or pay. The Town Series races are wildly popular (hundreds of registrations across 12 races in 2024) and available to anyone who wishes to participate. In addition to the Town Series — aimed at riders 6th grade through adult — Devo organizes three junior fun races just for kids 5th grade and younger.
WELL-TRAINED COACHES
We are proud to boast the only program in our region that requires full certification for all of our head coaches. This includes first aid, CPR, concussion training, SafeSport training, Devo-specific leadership and coaching training, and more. With 46 fully certified head coaches and 60 assistants and subs on our roster, it’s no small feat.
The mission of Durango Devo is to develop life-long cyclists, one ride at a time!
Durango Devo was born in 2006 to bring joy, confidence, and inner strength to Durango’s youth through the power of the bicycle. We believe that through the pursuit of mountain biking, we can help kids grow their appreciation for themselves, their community, and the environment.
With Devo, kids learn the power of effective goal setting, experience the thrill of tangible improvement, and are inspired and empowered to translate these lessons to other aspects of their lives. Devo's goals in the Durango community incorporate our belief that bikes are an incredible tool for enacting positive, tangible change in the lives of the people who ride them. At the end of the day, this is the guiding force that inspires all of us working with Devo.
Further, we aim to foster a safe, respectful, and conscientious appreciation and stewardship for the environment by engaging Durango's youth with the outdoors on their bikes. Not to mention the obvious: bikes provide a healthy, consistent, and positive outlet for kids (and adults!) to hone and focus their energy.
Before the mid-2000s, mountain biking was a niche sport with few youth participants and little to speak of in terms of support for those new to the pursuit. In Durango, Devo changed all of this. Growing from just 15 kids in two programs at its inception, Devo is one of Durango's largest and most widely recognized youth sports groups, in addition to being one of the most successful cycling development teams in the country.
Over the years, Devo has seen tremendous success, both in the competitive and non-competitive spheres. From a racing perspective, no other cycling development program compares to Durango Devo. Devo alumni include Olympians, World-Tour pros, Grand Tour stage winners, Cape Epic champions, World Championship medalists, and over 50 national champions.
But, even while Devo continues to churn out some of the world's best racers, at its core Devo is not a racing program! Devo's mission is to develop lifelong cyclists, and in practice, this means a lot more than just being great at riding bikes. Our alumni include artists, musicians, mechanics, activists, business owners, filmmakers, community leaders, scientists, and countless other incredible, kind humans who found inspiration on the trails of Durango while out riding with their Devo friends.
