About Us

El Comité is a social justice and human services organization providing essential services to the Latino and immigrant communities in Boulder County and surrounding areas. El Comité advances equity by ensuring that recently arrived community members, people who might not otherwise ask for help, are able to successfully navigate systems, and get their needs met and problems resolved. We also introduce people to trusted resources. In the process, our participants experience systems as accountable.

We provide the following services:

  • Walk-in services five days a week that include systems navigation, systems advocacy, translation/interpretation, assistance with applications to address issues like medical bills, child support, consumer issues, unemployment, workers compensation, retirement, tickets and warrants, insurance, domestic violence, referrals for basic needs, and more.
  • Wage Theft demand for payment letters, attorney and other agency referrals for wage theft-related representation and filing of official complaints.
  • ITINS, Drivers Licenses, translations, and notary public.
  • We help participants check and update their information on the USCIS website, provide donation-based assistance with citizenship applications via a partnership with a local immigration attorney, and donation-based pro se green card renewals.
  • Access to legal services - $30 attorney consultations with and attorney referrals to a network of eight local attorneys in the following legal specialties: immigration, criminal, personal/workplace injury, use of force and civil rights, family law, civil and tax.
  • Education program that includes ESL classes, Citizenship test prep, and GED classes.

Mission

The Mission of El Comité is to facilitate communication and understanding within the community to improve social justice, education, and economic status for the Latino, Immigrant, and non-Latino members of the community.

Background Statement

On August 14, 1980, two teens were shot by the Police in Longmont. The city was outraged and no voices were heard louder in their demands for justice than that of the Hispanic community. El Comité was formed by the Latino people of Longmont. This grassroots effort was driven as a means to bring advocacy to Longmont's Latino population. Community leaders helped start a fund for the young men's family and organized a candlelit vigil and march to Longmont's City Council. The protesters arrived with 1000 names on a petition and let it be known that relations between the police and the public needed to be reformed. Latino community leaders began work with the Department of Justice to advocate for the rights of Latinos and improve community relations with local law enforcement and the community at large. El Comité de Longmont was incorporated on November 26, 1980.
