Firehouse Theater Company is a non-profit theatrical organization dedicated to providing a collaborative environment where actors, producers, writers, directors, crew, and all other contributors, regardless of background, race, gender or sexual identity, physical ability, and experience have the opportunity to learn, explore, and practice the art of theater. We welcome the whole community to our theater where we tell stories about all kinds of people, and seek to represent diversity on and behind stage.

Actors and creatives who work with Firehouse Theater Company frequently let us know that we create a fun, family-like atmosphere.  Firehouse received the Westward award for Best Programming by a theater company in 2023.  Contributions from donors will enable us to raise compensation for the actors, designers, and crew that work with us on our productions. They work so hard and give so much....we want to be able to honor their work.

Mission

Firehouse Theater Company seeks to build a community of positivity, kindness, inclusivity, and joy through the theater arts. We bring to life on stage the experiences of a kaleidoscope of characters with the aim of entertaining audiences, broadening perspectives, and deepening empathy. We encourage collaboration and openness to new ideas. We support emerging artists and also celebrate our experienced creatives, giving everyone an opportunity to grow.

Background Statement

John Hand's passions were lifelong learning and Community Theater. He believed that both have the capacity to awaken our minds, inspire our souls, and foster our growth. He founded the lifelong learning center, Colorado Free University, in 1987.

John built a small theater in the CFU building and began offering performing arts classes to enable novices to experience the magic of theater. A core group of students joined in the creation of the Firehouse Theater Company. At the time of John's death in 2004, the Company was beginning to mount semi-professional shows. When he was killed in 2004, his sister, Helen Hand, joined with members of the troupe to keep John’s vision alive. A board of directors was established and the Firehouse attained recognition by the IRS as a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit organization.
