FISH OF WESTMINSTER, INC was established in 1970 by a group of Westminster citizens who were called to express their love and concern for their neighbors. FISH has evolved into multiple programs addressing food insecurity SW Adams County:
- Food pantry at Westminster Presbyterian Church - established 1995.
- Homeless support program - established 2018.
- Student support program at Westminster High/Front Range Community College TRIO Upward Program - established 2022.
- Fund free Thanksgiving Lunch - established 2023.
Food pantry clients are helped with food essentials once each month. They are provided sufficient food to feed their family 10 meals including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, and non-perishables including peanut butter, soup, pasta, and cereal. When available, culturally responsive food is also provided to help clients prepare "a taste of home." Diapers, hygiene products and pet food are also available.
Homeless clients visiting the food pantry are provided food, water, and personal hygiene items as well as items such as gloves, socks, hats, and scarves. Volunteers walk homeless camps weekly, passing out food and water as well as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, gloves and scarves.
Student clients are provided food and hygiene products. TRIO UP students remain after school to attend additional courses. These courses focus on increasing understanding and building skills required to be the first person in their family to attend and complete college.
Thanksgiving guests are provided a traditional Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day. This meal is provided in partnership with multiple Westminster congregations and the Northwest Eagles Aerie 4019.
Since opening our first food pantry, FISH of Westminster has provided over 3.25 million meals.
The need is significant. We are currently experiencing a 35% increase in number of clients over 2023.
