Our Mission |
What We Do |
FocusedKids partners with schools, families, and communities to prioritize healthy brain development for children. Using mindful self-regulation and brain-building techniques, we help increase resilience, self-awareness, and academic potential. |
Our research-backed social-emotional learning program focuses on basic brain knowledge and self-regulation techniques. Using engaging tools like puppets, we help children and adults understand how the brain works and use this knowledge to manage thoughts, feelings, and behavior. |
Why It Matters |
Where We Work |
Our neuroscience-based program helps children regulate emotions, cope with stress, and improve focus using mindfulness, movement, and play. Research from the Harvard Center for the Developing Child shows that self-regulation skills and strong adult relationships reduce toxic stress and improve mental health. Surveys show that children in our programs focus better than their peers, and teachers report reduced classroom stress. |
FocusedKids partners with public and private schools (Pre-K – Middle School) to serve rural communities along Colorado’s Western Slope, reaching nearly 3,000 youth, parents, and teachers annually. Most of the youth and families served are Latino (60-75%) and live in households with incomes at or below 260% of the federal poverty level, with 30% of the broader community being immigrants. Our programs focus on children ages 0-11, providing support to families and educators in underserved areas like Rifle, Glenwood Springs, and Carbondale. |
Funding Needs
Our biggest challenge is insufficient funding to serve all the youth, teachers, and families in need. Additional funding would enable us to:
-
Hire 1-2 trainers to reach an additional 2,000 students, 300 parents, and 60 teachers in Roaring Fork schools, Aspen to Parachute, with high poverty rates and limited resources.
-
Expand FocusedFamilies programs in public libraries and community spaces for predominantly Latino families with limited access to social-emotional health services.
-
Enhance our evaluation strategy to better measure and communicate our impact through improved tools and capacity.
