Background Statement
The Friends of the Longmont Senior Center, Inc, a nonprofit agency was created in 1981 to enhance community awareness and support of the Longmont Senior Center. By generating support throughout the community, the Friends can ensure that quality programs and services are available to all of Longmont's elders and their families. The Friends was incorporated in 1981 as a Colorado nonprofit corporation and registered as a 501(c)(3) Federal tax exempt organization with the IRS in 1983.
The first major activity for the Friends was to promote and spearhead the $350,000.00 Health and Nutrition expansion of the Longmont Senior Center from 1986-1988. This allowed Meals on Wheels and various health service organizations to use the Longmont Senior Center as their base of operations. The 4,000 square foot building expansion and installation of furnishings were completed in late 1988. The Friends obtained the funding for this expansion through donations by individuals, businesses, foundations as well as governmental funding. In 2000 the Friends supplemented the city bond funded $1,000,000.00 building expansion and remodel. This 8,000 square foot building expansion added 3 classrooms, a conference room, storage spaces, a new lobby with atrium, 10 offices and remodeling of the existing space.
