Our appeal is to change the dialogue about East Africa and development by bringing people from around Colorado to the table to share ideas and exchange stories. From these conversations, students and community leaders are empowered to develop ideas to create impact in their communities and beyond.
"I came to Uganda with children and grandchildren, knowing that I was in between lives -- of which I have had many. I had completed seven years of study and writing and have spent the last year floundering. What would this next life be like? I know that at 76 it will be most probably my last and I feel the pressure to make it special, to make it count. How, I know not. Then, exiting the airport after hours on the plane, tired and expectant, there was Jamie waiting for us with open arms. I need not retell the wondrous trip episodes only what has remained for me. Jamie is a visionary and a contagious one. The students who are attracted to him have a global view of the world that I have not experienced before. My vision had dimmed; my seeing was limited. You opened my eyes to possibility. to enthusiasm, to game changing.

The mission of the Global Livingston Institute is to convene global communities to learn and advance best practices in community development and create equitable, sustainable, and culturally responsive solutions to challenges in the areas of health, economic development, and the environment.
The Global Livingston Institute (GLI) is a community-based research institute developing strategic partnerships in both East Africa and in the United States with a focus on education and social impact. Modeled after the Aspen Institute and the Rockefeller Bellagio Center, the GLI creates a place at the table for students and community leaders to develop solutions to complex community and international challenges.
Global Livingston Institute is named after Johnston R. Livingston, a visionary, entrepreneur and philanthropist from Colorado. Jamie Van Leeuwen founded the GLI in 2009 after traveling to Uganda and Rwanda as part of the Livingston Fellowship he received from Bonfils-Stanton Foundation. During his travels, he became aware of the many people and NGOs taking actions in East Africa without truly understanding the needs of the community. He identified the need for people to do more listening and thinking before acting. Ultimately, the idea was to get students and community leaders to rethink the approach we take to international development. Since 2009, the GLI has been engaging students and community leaders in the United States and East Africa to Listen. Think. Act.
