Conceived by older women who love wilderness, Broads gives voice to the millions of Americans who want to protect their public lands and wilderness for this and future generations. We bring knowledge, leadership, and humor to the wilderness preservation movement.
"Just a short note to let you know of the gratitude I feel in my heart tonite for this lobbying opportunity. From the training to the team development to the scheduling...I have felt supported at every step. I really love my personal growth throughout this process. Great Old Broad for life!"
--Diane Mueller, Colorado
"...your newsletter and organization has a tone of optimism and fun that is a strong contrast from other environmental interest groups (and I support many). The Broads stand apart, particularly in your communication style. I enjoy every issue of your newsletter that comes to me - they're like letters from home. I share them often with students in my university classes and often highlight the Broads as an example of a non-profit at work for public lands. Thanks for all your hard work."
-- David B. Rolloff, Ph.D.
"My friends and I recently took a trip to the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument to go camping, running, and hiking. We discussed the challenges to the Monument and decided, as a group, to make donations to groups that are fighting to keep the monuments safe and intact!"
-- Broads donor
Great Old Broads for Wilderness is a women-led national grassroots organization that engages and inspires activism to preserve and protect wilderness and wild lands.
Ready to explore wild lands and waters? Ready to learn? Ready to take action and get involved? You've come to the right place.
Currently, we're 8,500 Broads, Bros and wildland enthusiasts strong across the nation engaged in educational forums, grassroots leadership training, outdoor education events, and advocacy. We have nearly 40 chapters (Broadbands) led by volunteers. Great Old Broads are known for being bold, telling it like it is, and having a lot of fun-while bringing forth a collaborative model of leadership. Join our community—all ages welcome.
Since our beginning, Broads have been a part of developing solutions to public land threats. We defend our nation's wilderness and work to designate new wilderness areas. We lend our support to conservation partners, testify at hearings on land use policy, and write letters to agency staff, media, and legislators. Educating ourselves about wilderness issues first, we then educate the public and policymakers. We fight for the clean air and water that wild, healthy lands provide.
And, we're educating communities about the critical connection between healthy public lands and climate change mitigation.
Great Old Broads is growing the feminine voice in conservation by empowering women to lend their years of experience to take a leadership role as an advocate for wild land protections. Many members, whether due to physical ability or geographic distance, may never visit the lands they struggle to preserve. Nonetheless, they want them preserved for future generations.
