Programs

Scholarships

Each year we see the remarkable difference an education makes in the lives of the children we work with. Lives are truly changed. Education gives hope, offers opportunity, provides confidence, enables stability, and delivers a path for a better future.

The GuateStar scholarship program not only provides the neediest students with tuition for an education, but also a menu of support services that include technology, extra lessons and follow up by dedicated tutors.

Education makes a difference in a child’s life.

Consider helping GuateStar extend this innovative education. Each scholarship you give will allow those that have the least to have a better future using innovative technology.

Club Extra

These are after school and vacation time programs that help GuateStar scholars. Students receive additional help through a facilitator/tutor with their courses and homework to increase understanding and success. Help goes beyond providing students tutoring. When in Club Extra they also receive a computer or tablet that allows them to access digit lessons and learning content via our unique MAYA system that does not require the internet. This program is extremely beneficial for students that come from homes that do not have access to the internet and/or where Mom and Dad do not read or write.

During vacation breaks special Club Extra events are hosted to encourage students to explore ideas and learning in many areas such as electronics, computer programming, robotics and more.

Club Extra gives children the extra help and encouragement they needs to succeed.

Testimonials

“Alex”* dreamed of a better future. He lived in a remote village in the Western Highlands in Guatemala, tending sheep, and doing whatever he could to help support his family. His father was murdered early in his young life over a community dispute. Alex desperately wanted a better future for himself and his family. Like many others in his community he was planning on going to the US thinking this was his only hope for a better future. He would work so he could send money home to his mother and siblings.

Thankfully before Alex could leave for the US, a family member encouraged him to seek a scholarship at one of our partner schools. He was granted a full scholarship and dedicated himself to studying. He excelled in school and even though he traveled 1 ½ hours each way he continued to work to help support his family.

Learning became his passion. While in school he also taught himself English by listening to music while reading the lyrics. He also joined the Club Extra program. This gave Alex access to new service and educational opportunities and support. He worked his way from being simply a participant, to volunteer then paid facilitator. Alex is now in a top university working on earning a degree in computer science.

Alex’s life changed. The opportunities he experienced through Club Extra and a scholarship have changed the trajectory of his life. His future is bright and full of hope!

Mission

GuateStar helps the indigenous population of Guatemala break the cycle of poverty through educational and community outreach projects. We build schools, give our students access to technology, teach Biblical values and provide community healthcare.

Background Statement

GuateStar is a non-profit founded by Ken and Lori Anderson in 2015 in response to an invitation by the Guatemalans for help. This continues a long tradition of helping the indigenous population of Guatemala that began in the 1950's by Ken's parents, Loren and Helen Anderson. As generations and their needs change, the methods have changed, but the goal remains the same. The Anderson's deep history with the people and culture provides a direct understanding of their needs and an efficient way to help through applying best practices. GuateStar seeks to provide solutions and resources that help, but don't create dependency.
