By making a donation to Gunnison Trails, you directly support the trails and access to public lands here in Gunnison, Colorado. Our trails serve as our connection to our natural surroundings, and are the backbone of our recreation economy here in the valley. Your support allows Gunnison Trails to continue to:
-Assist and work closely with local land managers from the Bureau of Land Management, the United States Forest Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife on trail related projects and issues.
-Maintain existing trails and trail infrastructure.
-Educate trail users and promote responsible use of Gunnison area trails.
-Propose, gain consent and approval for, and construct new trails and new trail systems.
-Work closely with other users of public lands and stakeholders including the ranching community, wildlife advocates and motorized trail users.
-Involve youth in the execution of our mission by providing meaningful and substantive opportunities for summer employment through our youth trail crew.

Testimonials

Since 2006, Gunnison Trails has averaged over 1,000 hours of volunteer labor each year on public lands through the valley. We host weekly trail work Tuesdays, inviting the public to come and work on trails in need of maintenance. Since 2016, our Professional Trail crew has employed local high school and college students working full-time June-October maintaining trails and assisting the BLM and US Forest Service with stewardship work across public lands in the Gunnison Basin.

Mission

Gunnison Trails is a non-profit trail advocacy organization established to assist land managers and other organizations and stakeholders, in maintaining existing trails, educating users on responsible trail-based recreation and pursuing new opportunities for biking, running and hiking trails which promote sustainable trail use throughout Gunnison County.

Background Statement

Gunnison Trails was founded in 2006 to address resource concerns and trail maintenance needs at Hartman Rocks recreation area. Since that time, Gunnison Trails:

-Employs a 6-person professional trail crew that contributes over 3,500 hours of trail work each year.

-Averages over 1,000 hours of volunteer work every summer.

-Maintains over 80 miles of world class trails in the area on BLM public lands.

-Built over 10 new miles of non-motorized, singletrack trail in the Signal Peak area adjacent to downtown Gunnison. The Signal Peak trail system has been a work in progress since 2006, and the hard work and dedication of countless individuals made this newest trail system possible.

-Partner with the BLM in rerouting several trails that were in areas of natural resource concern, install roll-overs at fence intersections.

-Partner with the USFS to maintain trails in wilderness areas.

-Educates trail users; attends meetings with the public and with land managers; creating and presenting proposals for trails improvements on public lands near Gunnison, CO; as well as other trail advocacy tasks.

-Helped trail users to understand and honor seasonal trail closure for wildlife protection.
