Background Statement
Formed in 2015, the High Country Sinfonia (HCS) has presented two concert series each year featuring numerous soloists as well as the full ensemble. Concerts are free and open to the public, taking place in accessible venues throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Diverse programming is also a focus of HCS, with past performances including a range of works from Jessie Montgomery's Strum to Brandenburg Concerti, to Bartók, Piazzolla, Britten and more.
The High Country Sinfonia was founded in the spring of 2015 by Wendy Larson, a musician, teacher, and conductor in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. The Sinfonia was designed to rehearse and perform without a conductor. While relying on the concertmaster or a soloist to lead rehearsals and performances, the collaborative process invited all players to contribute their expertise and experience in the service of the music at hand.
The Sinfonia has also collaborated with other groups, including two longtime local organizations, the Aspen Choral Society and Symphony in the Valley.
In early 2021, the Sinfonia established its non-profit corporate status as a 501c3 business. A board was established to oversee administrative tasks, including programming, fundraising, and marketing with the aim to increase the Sinfonia’s musical offerings, expand its audience, and continue to offer all concerts free of charge.
