Testimonials

"From class presentations in Spanish - giving my students a real-life look at gangs in L.A. and Denver - to workshops in English with students hanging on his every word during my school's day of inclusivity, his story is amazing. Gang life, to gang intervention, to dealing with injustices, he has risen above it all and does amazing work with at-risk youth. Thank you Gerardo Lopez and Homies Unidos!"

Mission

Homies Unidos Denver works to end violence and promote peace in our community through gang prevention and intervention; the promotion of human rights in immigrant communities and the empowerment of youth and families in Denver to achieve their full potential in a just, safe and healthy society.

Background Statement

For over 20 years, Homies Unidos Denver has been a catalyst for change, dedicated to ending violence and fostering peace in our communities. Through gang prevention and intervention, advocacy for immigrant rights, and empowering youth with positive alternatives, we are creating pathways for lasting change. Our commitment extends to mental health and trauma-informed programs that provide young people with critical emotional support and coping strategies, helping them to heal and thrive.

Our recent initiatives include mental health workshops, one-on-one counseling, and skill-building programs like HUD Studios, where youth can explore creative outlets in photography and videography. By addressing the root causes of violence and offering therapeutic support, we empower youth with the tools they need to build a brighter future. We are living proof that prevention works and that peace is possible.

An independent chapter of Homies Unidos was established in Denver in 2015. Homies Unidos Denver leverages the expertise and resources of Homies Unidos nationally, but customizes its programs and services to meet the unique needs of youth in Denver. The Homies Unidos Denver team is comprised primarily of Central American and other Latino youth who have renounced violence in their lives.

In a typical year, Homies Unidos Denver serves 150-200 youth across the city. Homies Unidos Denver is led by Gerardo Lopez, whose own lived experience with gang involvement and the criminal justice system informs his day-to-day work with youth. He has been an inspiring ambassador for the organization and its mission and his story has been spotlighted on TEDxMileHigh, the documentary film Clever, 9News, Telemundo, and Westword.
