Background Statement
HFSOCO is part of the Honor Flight Network, a national network of independent Hubs working together to celebrate America’s veterans by inviting them to share in a day of honor at our nation’s memorials in Washington, D.C.
A Flight is much more than a sightseeing trip to our nation’s capital. Traveling with others who have had similar experiences, the veterans find cohesion and family. The flight provides veterans an opportunity to remember and honor those who did not make it home and for some finally feel appreciated for their service to our country. We have had many veterans tell us their Honor Flight experience was life changing.
HFSOCO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered with the State of Colorado. We are a 100% volunteer organization, which operates solely on donations and fund raising.
The Honor Flight Board of Directors is made up of 13 volunteers from the Southern Colorado Community. There are 9 veterans on the board representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
Formed in 2011, HFSOCO has conducted 19 Flights to date. We had a two-year flight moratorium due to COVID-19 but started flying again in April 2022.
Our current pace is two trips of 30 veterans per year. With a growing wait list we would like to expand that number to 60 veterans per trip. Raising funds is our greatest challenge.
It costs $1200 to send a veteran on a Flight. This cost includes transportation, lodging, meals, and clothing. In addition to covering all veteran expenses, HFSOCO also pays the expense of medical personnel to ensure our veterans are well cared for and a photographer to capture this once in a lifetime trip.
As of October 1, 2024, there are more than 250 veterans waiting to go on an Honor Flight.
