Mission

ICAST's mission is to provide economic, environmental, and social benefits to communities in a manner that builds local capacity.

Background Statement

ICAST (International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology) was founded in 2002 as an initiative at the Engineering School of the University of Colorado at Boulder that delivered social, economic, and environmental benefits to the local community through student-designed projects guided by experienced faculty. Today, ICAST is a 501c3 nonprofit headquartered in Lakewood, CO, that brings weatherization, energy efficiency, clean energy technology, and health and safety upgrades to the communities that need them most. As a leader in multifamily affordable housing (MFAH) program design and general contracting, we partner with state governments to administer MFAH improvement programs while working with MFAH property owners and managers to execute on-the-ground projects. ICAST innovated a one-stop-shop model, combining general contracting services with innovative financing solutions that unlock deep retrofits for the parts of our community historically left behind, increasing comfort, safety, and health while reducing financial strain on our disadvantaged community members.

In addition to our focus on MFAH in the U.S., ICAST also partners with Tribes, Tribal Nations, and affiliated organizations throughout the Southwest. We provide turnkey development services for Tribes and Nations seeking energy sovereignty and resiliency through renewable solar energy. Currently, ICAST is providing technical and financial assistance for the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Taos Pueblo as they seek to obtain renewable energy independence and clean energy storage.

Our programs and projects provide tangible savings to the economically burdened. From 2020 to 2023, ICAST managed a demand-side utility program for Pepco in Washington, DC. This program offered holistic, deep energy savings via multifaceted retrofits—providing very high-efficiency HVAC systems, water heaters, weatherization, water efficiency, and more. Each family participating in the program will save an average of over $280 a year due to the upgrades installed. The program distributed $9 million in rebates and will save the low-income families it impacted $18 million in utility cost savings over the lifetime of the upgrades (about 15-20 years). One project from this program, the Stanton Glenn Apartments project, saves families living in the property about $705 each year. For the disadvantaged communities we serve, this extra money freed up from utility bills can go a long way toward financial stability, mental wellbeing, and other necessities like food, medication, and housing.
