The JEKL Institute for Global STEAM Equity & Access was founded by black woman who holds degrees in physics and advanced degrees in mechanical and nuclear engineering. Toi Massey, M.E., knows all too well the tables from which those that look like her are absent. She believed if ever there would be an equitable number of BIPOC girls and African American youth contributing to the STEM professions, including art+design (STEAM), she would have to do her part to make it happen.

So, by meeting them where they are today in order to actively engage and prepare them for where they could be headed tomorrow, she exposes scholars, awakening their genius, empowering them with the audacity to dream BIG!

With programs that serve metro Denver and rural Colorado, The JEKL Institute has expanded to include efforts to close the digital divide, placing laptops into the hands of those we train in digital and financial literacy!

Giving Activity

Mission

To embrace and support the uninitiated, closing the gap between access and opportunity, in order to change the face of STEM forever!

Background Statement

When JEKL opened its doors in 2012 we had a vision that through our programming, girls and youth of color pursue the STEM disciplines and their numbers in STEM would be increased. We have reached nearly 60,000 youth across the United States & Africa, placing a JEKL STEAM GENIUS BOX! into every single hand. In 2020 we reorganized, emerging as The JEKL Institute for Global STEAM Equity & Access, a name that more accurately reflects our reach and our expansion. Our scholars are among the brightest pre K -12th grade STEM geniuses and 100% of those that have graduated high school have entered college as STEM majors, graduated college and trades in STEM! We partner with school districts, corporations and non profit community partners across the globe! We are developing a STEM workforce, talent prepared to address the world’s challenges across the STEM disciplines! To think it all started with our Founder’s audacity to dream and our donors' selfless generosity to fuel that dream! We embrace the uninitiated with every intention to change the face of STEM forever!
